摘要:Over the last decades, motivated by pedagogical implications in teaching writing,many researchers have become more and more interested in studying written Englishdiscourse.

Some researchers label theiranalysis discourse analysis,while others claim they are doing text analysis, but therelationship between text and discourse is often inconsistent. Some claim to make cleardistinctions between discourse and text (Widdowson, 1973; Hoey,1983; Tadros, 1985;Brown & Yule, 1983),but there are still many disagreements saying that they are actuallythe same concept (Chafe, 1992; Dijk,1990). With respect to the distinctions between textand discourse, there exist two kinds of controversies. One distinction is to look at text asproduct and discourse as process, to which there is considerable overlap between thefindings of studies. The other one is that text analysis investigates written form, whilediscourse analysis spoken form. This is also not necessary because many studies have usedmodels originally developed for studying spoken form to investigate written form (Tadros,1985), and vice versa (Hoey,1983). In this paper, text and discourse are considered thesame, without any essential discrepancy.

2.2 The Development of Cohesion Theory
A number of preliminary attempts on the study of textual cohesion were performed in1960s and 1970s. But it was not until the publication of Halliday and Hasan's bookCohesion in English in 1976 that the cohesion theory began to take its shape. Their theoryis regarded as the standard in this cohesion study. At the very start, Halliday and Hasan(1976) focus on non-structural relations referring to cohesion, a semantic relationincluding grammatical and lexical cohesion. In Language, Context, and Text by Halliday& Hasan (1989),the cohesion theory is developed by adding the structural cohesionincluding theme-rheme structure, information structure, parallel structure and adjacencypair. At the same time, nonstructural cohesion can be divided further into componentialrelations and organic relations. Componential relations contain four of the former fivecohesive ties: Reference, substitution and ellipsis, and lexical cohesion that can form threesemantic relations: co-referentiality, co-classification, and co-extension. Organic relationsare composed of conjunctives, adjacency pairs and continuatives, etc.In Patterns of Lexis in Text’ Hoey (1991) attempts to describe a new system ofanalysis based on the study of cohesion, particularly lexical cohesion. What distinguishesit from foregoing studies is that the attention is not primarily on itemizing cohesivefeatures but on observing how they combine as a text. Some amendments have been madeto Halliday and Hasan's framework of lexical cohesion, especially various types of lexicalrepetition. Thompson (1996) elaborates his idea about cohesion as the quality of being arecognizable text rather than a collection of unconnected words or clauses. From thestandpoint of Thompson, grammatical cohesion in the text mainly has reference,ellipsis(including substitution), and conjunction.
