摘要:Over the last decades, motivated by pedagogical implications in teaching writing,many researchers have become more and more interested in studying written Englishdiscourse.

Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION


1.1 Research Background
Writing, as a significant embodiment of language competence,plays a fundamentalrole in daily communication for people of all occupations. Linguistically speaking,it is theresult of complex processes of planning, drafting, reviewing and revising. As a moredependable method of recording and presenting transactions in a permanent form, writingis more complex than other language skills such as reading, listening, speaking. Itexamines one's capability to handle a language and ability to deliver ideas, especially forpostgraduate students. Because they are required to do creative research and express theirown critical ideas over some issues related to their research topic. Foreign students whohave mastered syntactic structures have still demonstrated inability to compose adequatethemes,terms papers, theses, and dissertations (Kaplan, 1976). The Instructors have givencomments on foreign-student papers, such as “The material is all here,but is seemssomehow out of focus," or “Lacks organization", or “Lacks cohesionwhich areessentially accurate (Kaplan, 1976). Therefore, for whatever purpose, we need to composenot only coherently but also correctly for effective communication.Undoubtedly,for teachers of writing,they should teach students how to writeeffectively. While for every student, we should pay close heed to constructing a successfulpiece of writing so that our viewpoints can be conveyed accurately and effectively.Cohesion (Halliday & Hasan,1976; Zhang & Liu,2003) has been recognized as animportant measurement of effective writing. However, in traditional way of teaching andlearning, much more attention was paid to the problems at the levels of sentences,phrases,and words rather than textual level. As a result, “many students can only writegrammatically correct sentences but fail to progress because they are incapable oforganizing their ideas in a manner that is acceptable to an English reader.,’(Cooper,1979)There are multifaceted problems such as logical mess,poor topic continuity, lack ofspecific examples and details, and inadequacy of cohesion.

1.2 Research Significance
Over the last decades, motivated by pedagogical implications in teaching writing,many researchers have become more and more interested in studying written Englishdiscourse. In particular, with the advent of cohesion theory,widespread researches havebeen carried out on cohesion,which is one way of exploring the use of language at thelevel of text. Although much has been studied about cohesive ties of writings produced byNS and NNS writers, a big picture of cohesive features in academic writings has yet toemerge. Therefore, this paper attempts to probe the English Abstracts of MA thesesproduced by NS and NNS graduate students due to the importance of abstract in academicwriting and the necessity of investigations of the role of cohesion in abstracts.

2.1 Significant Notions
It has been suggested so far that it is just as difficult to distinguish text from discourseas it is to tell the difference between tweedledum and tweedledee.
