h. The Linden Lab said their goal was to create a virtual world which looked like the meta-universe described in Snow Crash. In this world, people can define their own ways of interact with others, playing, doing business, and communication. The virtual currency in SL is called Linden Dollar (Linden, or L$). It can convert into dollars in the specialized markets formed by the residents, in Linden Lab or some entity companies.

Although sometimes Second Life is seen as a game, it does not have points, winners, losers, levels, a final target, and some of the features as the other games have. Now there are about a total of 5,000,000 registered users, but many users are not much too active, and some residents have more than one account. Despite more prominent in this area, Second Life still has a lot of competitors, including Active Worlds, There, and a number of new competitors, such as Entropia Universe, uWorld, Dotsoul virtual park, Red Light Center, and Kaneva.

Recently, Second Life has become a virtual classroom in a large number of schools or universities, including the University of Edinburgh (UK), Princeton University (USA), Rice University (USA), University of Derby (UK), Vassar College (USA), the University of Plymouth (UK), the Open University (UK), and other schools. According to an article in The New York Times, they have sold about 100 pieces of the land used for purposes of education. Rebecca Nesson, a teacher of Harvard, brought her "legitimate research" course into the Second Life in the second half of 2006. “Normally, no matter how good a distance-learning class is, an inherent distance does still exist between you and your students,” she says. “Second Life has really bridged that gap. There is just more unofficial time that we spend together outside of the typical class session” (New York Times, 2007). For the Second Life applies in education, Joe Sanchez, a researcher in University of Texas at Autin, evaluated an interactive qualitative analysis and had found that once the students overcame the technical difficulties of using Second Life, They “show a preference of social-learning activities, and get great fun through the learning process and interact with others" (Joe Sanchez, 2007). Second Life was used for the foreign language teaching in 2007. Traditional Educators also started using the virtual world for language teaching. Some schools, English (as a Foreign Language) training rapid growth in the virtual world, such as the British Council’ project which focus on the Teen Grid (13-17 years-old use the Second Life) about the English language training. The Spanish Cultural Exchange Association ("Instituto Cervantes") also has its own virtual land in Second Life.
