1.1 Background of the Study

Apart from the indivisible relationshipbetween testing and teaching, language tests are frequently used as criterion measuresof language abilities in second language acquisition research (Bachman, 1990). TEM4,a national criterion-Referenced English proficiency test and achievement test, is usedto measure the English abilities of Chinese sophomore students majoring in English.As one of the important components in a test paper, writing aims to fosterstudents’ productive abilities, so that they can communicate effectively with theirinternational counterparts after they graduate. However, how to assess students’writing performance? Whether the writing task is representative to meet the test goalor suitable for the applicants to write? To answer these questions, we have to assessthe quality of the test, since the most important quality of test interpretation is validity,and one of the first characteristics of a test that we examine is its content, this thesis isnarrowed down to examine the content validity of writing test in TEM4.Through some researches on the content validity of writing test in CET4 andCET6 and writing test in TEM8, few researches have been conducted to examine thecontent validity of writing test in TEM4. Furthermore, TEM4 have undergone manychanges and in 2004 new testing syllabus was edited and implemented in 2005. Howcan we know whether the test, especially the innovated test, is valid? We need toprove it with evidence. Therefore, here comes a great necessity to study the contentvalidity of writing test, especially whether the writing tasks really test what is requiredin the teaching and testing syllabuses in TEM4 after innovation. The sample testpapers will be selected from 2005 to 2011.

1.2 Introduction to TEM4
TEM4 is first administered by Instructional Committee of Higher EducationForeign Language Major of Ministry of Education in 1990. As time goes on, TEM4has been undergoing constant changes and drawing more population in China. It wasoriginally used to check the implementation of national teaching syllabus which isspecified for English majors at the end of their second year at university.
