hile when interpreting a text, the readers tend to supplyall the missing information, all the components of the picture which are not present inthe text but are necessary to its interpretation by means of cohesive devices. So it ishelpful to possess the knowledge of cohesion in the interpretation of a text.As a common and frequently used tool in testing, cloze is often used to measureEnglish learners’ overall language ability. It is widely applied in all levels ofexaminations all over the world, including classroom tests, especially in middleschool and high school, and public standardized tests such as CET-4, CET-6, TEM-4,and NEEP. Cloze is a single and complete text which is cohesive in form and coherentin meaning. Each cloze is concerning on one topic or field, in other words, it isdefined in certain register. The items that cohere with each other help to build theentire text. When answering this test, students first interpret the whole text throughthe analysis of cohesive relations, and then choose the right answer.d on the previous studies, this thesis, for the first time, applies cohesiontheory  cloze test and tends to provide useful solutions for test takers throughsystematic analysis. In other words, this thesis is a tentative endeavor to put thecohesion theory  cloze testing. In this thesis, the corpus is made up of 30 authenticpapers of cloze test, including the latest ten cloze tests respectively in CET-6, TEM-4,and the national entrance examination for graduates. Through the comprehensiveanalysis of the corpus, the writer of this thesis tends to present different types thatappear in the corpus and finds out the corresponding cohesive devices to each type tomake little contribution to the fulfillment of cohesion theory. Meanwhile, the writerhopes for bringing benefits for test takers, or language learners, in interpreting a textand in solving problems in cloze tests.

　　本论文的结构分为五个parts.In第一章，简要介绍了将包括本研究论文的目的和意义，以及整体结构国税发[论文的研究背景。第二章将包括两部分。This thesis is constructed  five parts.In chapter one, a brief introduction will be given including research backgroundof the thesis, the purpose and significance of this research, and the overall structure ofthe thesis.Chapter two will consist two parts. The first part will mainly deal with review ofcohesion theory including its notions and distinction between cohesion and coherenceas well as the development of cohesion theory both at home and abroad. In the secondpart, the definitions and classifications of cloze test will be included together with theapplications of cohesion theory to cloze test.Chapter three is the methodology of the thesis in which the theoreticalframework will be given, as well as research questions. The data which is collected touse in this thesis is also stated in this chapter. Meanwhile, the procedure of analysiswill be stated too.Chapter four is the essential part of this thesis. In this chapter, there are twosubsections which all present the quantitative analysis and results of thirty authenticpapers. The first section gives a brief introduction to five types of cohesive devicesused in the corpus with detailed illustrations respectively. The second section ismainly about the research findings by text types and the distributions of five cohesivedevices in each type.
