J.R.Searle develops speech act theory and introduces the notion of an'indirect speech act', more particularly, an indirect 'illocutionary' act. Based on Searle,Dirven & Verspoor (1998:164-167) explains the speech act from cognitive perception.They classified it into three categories. The act which searches for and transmitsinformation is regarded as informative speech act, such as assertion and statement.The act imposed the responsibility on oneself or others is considered as obligativespeech act, such as request and promise. The last one is constitutive speech actsincluding apology and praise. In order to achieve the communicative goal, the speechact should meet Felicity conditions, obey cooperative principle and apply politeness tomake the communication successful.In the following, scholars begin to analyze the speech act in depth and mainlythere are some characteristics. First of all, they lay stress on syntactic structure thatdifferent speech act may focus on different sentence type. Then the way of collectionof corpus becomes to diversify. Researchers collect the corpus from hearers primarilythrough questionnaire survey, including DCT, MCQ and SRQ. However, the corpus isnot the natural conversation. The most important change is that researchers introducepoliteness and speech strategies. In addition, they make study of various concretespeech strategies to reflect politeness.Blum- Kulka, House & Kasper have done CCSARP (Cross-Cultural Study ofSpeech Act Realization Patterns) which is well-known to different researchers fromall over the world and used in Speech Act field. In Cross Cultural Pragmatics:Requests and Apologies, they analyze two kinds of speech act: requests and apologiesand propose three strategies in making requests: direct strategy, conventionallyindirect strategy and unconventionally indirect strategy. Influence by CCSARP, thepresent study will focus on an analysis of requests in television comedy-drama seriesDesperate Housewives from the perspective of strategies.
