摘要:Need analysis/NA refers to a technique and method serving the study of need withthe means of introspection, interview, observation and questionnaire.

2.1 Questions
The purpose of this study is to conduct an investigation on curriculum developmenton the basis of needs analysis of non-English majors in HUST. It aims at finding outwhether the current curriculum meets the learners’ needs and providing a Reference forthe evaluation and improvement of the current curriculum development.
(1) What are students’needs for advanced courses of college English?
(2) What are students’attitudes towards the current English curriculum?

2.2 Subjects
The research subjects are 500 non-English majors from HUST. Of this questionnairesurvey, 96.3% of participants are sophomores and 83.1% of participants are malestudents (see table 2.1) The participants in this survey are selected randomly majoring indifferent disciplines, covering Hydraulic and Hydropower, Optic and ElectronicInformation Engineering , Electronic Science and Technology, Mechanical DesignManufacturing and Automation, Industrial Engineering, Measurement and ControlTechnology and Instrumentation, Applied Physics, Thermal Energy and PowerEngineering, Computer Science and Technology, Information Security, etc. As themajority of HUST are students of engineering, it is necessary to choose more studentswith engineering background than the students of arts. 15 interviewees were selectedrandomly from these subjects. Nine advanced English courses were covered: English Audio-Visual Media Course,Intermediate English Listening and Speaking Course, English Public Speaking andIntercourse Course, English Articles Reading Course, Advanced English Reading andWriting Course, A General Introduction Course to British and American Culture, AGeneral Introduction Course to Chinese Culture, Basic Translation Course, AcademicEnglish Listening and Speaking Course.

3Results and Discussion


This chapter will demonstrate the results of the data obtained from thequestionnaires and interviews. The discussion is concerned with the results of theinvestigation so as to answer the questions mentioned in chapter two. Therefore, thefollowing research questions will be answered: (1) What are students’ learning needsconcerning the following aspects: students’ favorite type of advanced courses, students’most desirable English skills, their learning style, their favorite teaching methods,teaching materials, assessment pattern and teachers’role? (2) What are students’attitudestowards the current English curriculum?There are 17 questions in the questionnaire to investigate students’needs for Englishlearning and their attitudes towards the current English curriculum. In this chapter, theseitems are clarified into three groups to facilitate discussion, concerning the students’personal information, students’ needs on their English learning, and students’ attitudes tothe current English curriculum. These kinds of information are selected so as to answerthe research questions and provide a reference for the pedagogical implications.
