摘要:本文是大学英语论文,With apurpose to explore how the “static” modes realize the communicative meaningindependently or collectively and how the complex and varied relations between theimages and the texts are, the study is going to be theoretically descriptive on thebasis of representative examples.

Since Microsoft’s PowerPoint software came into being in the 1990s, it quicklysuperseded the traditional presentation medium and diffused globally at a stunningspeed. Both foreign scholars and domestic experts have showed tremendousenthusiasm for this object and made significant contributions in this respect. Theyconduct the relevant studies mainly from the aspects of the PPT evaluation, thetechniques and design principles, the teaching application and so on and so forth.There is absolutely no doubt whatsoever none of those studies at home and abroadcan be neglected.

2.2 Definition of PowerPoint
PowerPoint is a presentation program that is part of the Microsoft Office Suiteusually bundled with Word and Excel and available for both Windows and Macoperating systems (Kangas, 2012, p. 421). Users can put text, sound, picture, videoand other available resources in it. Or in Bucher & Niemann’s terminology (2012, p.301),“PowerPoint ... They incorporate a prototype of multimodal discourse,combining speech, text, figurative and graphical visuals, elements of design and awhole family of performative actions.” Initially, it got high popularity in thecommercial circle but now it has penetrated into the educational field in every nookand corner of the whole world. At a matter of fact, PowerPoint is just one of manytypes of presentation software (Fisher, 2003, p. 1). Nowadays, there is more variousadvanced visual software of different corporations, such as Prezi, Keynote, Ipresent,Slideidea and so on and so forth. However, according to Hu Zhuanglin’s viewpoint(2007, p. 3), it is necessary to make a distinction between tool, text, and genre whenscholars talk about PPT. If PPT is regarded as a tool, it means “PowerPoint isprofessional software which can be used to make slides with text, picture, sound andany other material. It does not convey any information at all itself.” But when itrefers to a text, it is composed of all the contents in the presentation, including visual,audile, graphical, textual material. That’s to say, all the presentation processes (report,speech, lecture) are components of a PPT text. As for a genre of communication,which is analogous to the concepts like a letter, a message, a story, a dialogue, anovel, a speech or a script, it embraces both of the former two connotations. In thispaper, the author agrees with the third concept of PPT as genre and will focus on itsapplication to language teaching as profoundly as possible.
