nbsp;language and its learning. According to the investigation made by other researchers, many students only memorize the written form of words and don’t know the meaning and how to pronounce them. So when they read some materials, they feel that they are familiar with the words, but they don’t know the meaning, which does not mean that they really remember the vocabulary entries. In the Chinese academic setting, a large number of college students have lots of difficulty in memorizing new words but easily forgetting those words they already learnt quickly. Their small vocabulary size limits them in understanding English texts, even sentences, as well as writing English words. Confusion in reading, listening and writing causes failure in examination, and it is deducible that vocabulary size also has effect on teaching process, and inadequate vocabulary hinder teachers’ complete teaching system, which can be a vicious circle between teacher and students.

Since producing and understanding language undoubtedly involve cognitive process, categorization is something necessary that takes place in our minds, and the categories resulting from it can be understood as mental concepts stored in our mind. Five benefits of forming categories based on Stephen K. Reed (1992) are listed as follows: 1. Categorizing object “reduces the complexity of the environment.” When we classify discriminatively different objects as being equivalent, we respond to them in terms of their class membership rather than as unique items. 2. Categorizing is “the means by which objects of
