The Relationship between E-business and Knowledge Management in China
Chapter 1: introduction
Research background and motivation
For this study, I would like choose “The Relationship between E-business and Knowledge Management in China” as my topic. Benjamin Franklin said that knowledge is investment with the highest return rate. Lew Platt (CEO of HP) also pointed out that the profit of HP will increase three times than now, if HP can fully understand the knowledge what HP already have.(Fryer 1999) Base on the research for Hughes Areospace (Arian Ward 1997), the research pointed out that the manages spend 15%-20% time to search knowledge and respond the knowledge relative requirements. Therefore, knowledge is a very important factor both in management area and operation area. From Ancient Greece, the philosophers had started to explore what is knowledge, but until the recent decade, Nonaka and Takeuchi (Japanese scholars) started really and truly to understand the importance of knowledge for a business organization.
In fact, all organizations use and create knowledge during all the business processes although sometime they place in unconscious situation. When organizations interact with their environments, the organizations continually absorb information and covert to knowledge. And they will organize the knowledge and use it base on their experience, world view and internal system. The organization can’t work properly if the organization lacks knowledge. (Davenport and Prusak 1998). Thereby, with the competitive become more and more intensive today, companies should switch their focus from tangible asset to intangible asset especially the intelligent capital. Unfortunately, organization’s knowledge generally store in organization in unstructured and semi-structured forms. For instance: organization’s embedded-knowledge or knowledge storing in brain of staff, this kind of knowledge normally syncretize with the special relationship between people and organization, criterion, and information systems. It is very difficult that to separate this kind of knowledge and store in some specific forms such as literature or guide line. So, how to use the intelligent capital to gain competitive advantage is the main goal of knowledge management of an organization.
When people talk about knowledge management, normally they have common misleading that knowledge management totally and only concern with information technology. In fact, knowledge management start from objectives and processes of an organization, also perceive the necessary of sharing information within an organization. (Gates, 1999) Information technologies (IT) just are tools that can increase the effective of implementation during activities of knowledge creation. Wherefore knowledge don’t must concern with science and technology but the technology must play an important role in knowledge management.(Davenport and Prusak, 1999) The core of knowledge management is managing information flowing and encouraging knowledge sharing within organization. The purposes of knowledge management are knowledge creation and provide right knowledge to right people at right time. (Andersen Consulting, 1999) Some activities of knowledge management had adopted in early time by knowledge-intensive industry.
