摘要:Thus, this study intends to probe intothe process of text memorization by investigating a few cases in order to betterunderstand how text memorization facilitates second language learning.

Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Need for the Study
Importance of text memorization as a traditional language learning methodText memorization has been an old, traditional method of Chinese literacylearning whose importance is widely recognized (Ding & Qi, 2001). As an ancientChinese saying goes, "after reading up three hundred Tang poems, you can at leastintone poems even if you can't write them." Zheng Banqiao,a famous Chinese poetand painter in Qing Dynasty, emphasized that his ability of writing poems was mostlyfostered by reading aloud and memorizing ancient Chinese poems. This practice oftext memorization is still greatly valued and widely used as an indispensable teachingmethod in Junior High Schools' Chinese classes.Within the context of Chinese education, text memorization as a learning strategyfor English learning is also well-embraced by many distinguished scholars whothemselves have been successful foreign language learners and who attribute theirlanguage proficiency mostly to the effectiveness of text memorization. In addition, theimportance of text memorization as an English learning strategy is affirmed by someempirical studies (Ding & Qi, 2001) pointing out that text memorization and imitationshould have a legitimate place in second language education.

1.2 Layout of the thesis
The whole thesis is divided into five chapters as follows:
Chapter One introduces the background and the need for the study.
Chapter Two gives a review of relevant literature, in which two key concepts arediscussed: memory and text memorization. It also explores the related theories, theprevious studies, and the research gaps between the previous studies and the presentstudies
.Chapter Three deals with the methodology of this study, including the researchquestions, research design, preparation and data collection, and the data analysis.
Chapter Four reports and discusses the major findings. It focuses on three majorfindings concerning the process of text memorization.
Chapter Five discusses the teaching implications this study has yielded. It alsoaddresses the limitations of the present study and makes suggestions for futureresearch.

Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 Key Concepts
This part focuses on two pivotal concepts in the present study, namely, memoryand text-memorization. Most of the studies of memorization are conducted in the realm of psychology, inwhich memorization is regarded as a kind of memory strategy.In psychology, memorization is the processes by which information is encoded,stored, and retrieved. According to Carlson (2010),encoding allows information thatis from the outside world to reach our senses in the forms of chemical and physicalstimuli. In this first stage, we must change the information so that we may put it intothe encoding process. Storage is the second memory stage or process. This entails thatwe maintain information over periods of time. Finally the third process is the retrievalof information that we have stored. We must locate it and return it to ourconsciousness. All the definitions of text memorization emphasize two elements: "reading out"and "retrieving from memory."
