s core ideas have been the spiritual food of Chinesepeople for more than 2,000 years. As it has gained popularity over recent years, thebook in the original was time and again given translated versions in differentlanguages. Translation researchers and scholars both at home and abroad began tofocus their attention on the study of its English versions. The focusing points mainlyinclude the translation purposes, limits of translatability or merits and demerits ofdifferent versions but few came down to the discussion and summary of translationstrategies which can be adopted in translating culture-loaded terms. Traditionaltranslation methods of culture specific terms are confined to dichotomy, which areforeignization and domestication. Another influential theory, Nida’s EFT is employedin this paper, and receptor’s response is considered when different translationstrategies are judged.

　　This thesis focuses primarily on the following questions:⒈ According to Nida’s classification, what culture-loaded terms are included inThe Analects of Confucius?⒉ What translation strategies do Arthur Waley and D.C.Lau adopt whentranslating each kind of culture-loaded terms? What are the merits and demerits?⒊ Based on Nida’s FET, what are the general translation strategies which canbe employed to translate culture-loaded terms?

　　1.4 Structure of the Thesis论文结构
　　This paper consists of five chapters.Chapter One provides the general introduction of the thesis including theresearch background, purpose of the study, research questions and structure of thisthesis.Chapter Two is the literature review part. Firstly, a profile about Confucianismand its classic work The Analects of Confucius is given. Different English versionsand previous studies on its English versions home and abroad are provided as well.Then this paper explores the definition, classification and previous studies ofculture-loaded terms. At last, a summary of the content of this chapter is presented.Chapter Three elucidates the theoretical basis concerning the translation study ofThe Analects of Confucius, in which the core and relative concepts as well as theimpact and application of Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory are discussed at fulllength. A specific description of the research methodology, data resources as well asthe analyzing methods is also given.Chapter Four is the main body of this paper, in which each kind of culture-loadedterms in The Analects of Confucius is tentatively identified and their Englishrenderings both in Arthur Waley’s and D.C.Lau’s versions are compared andfurthermore certain basic translation principles and strategies corresponding to theculture-loaded terms are analyzed and summarized.Chapter Five indicates the major findings of this thesis and points out thelimitations and suggestions for further studies.
