ng comprehension. There are three effective ways to cultivate students’ interest in listening:
One is to choose interesting materials for students to listen to. An interesting listening material can easily arouse their interest in listening. The materials cannot be too difficult, or they will easily frustrate students’ confidence. The topic and language can be related to the textbook lessons the students have learned. The listening materials must be selected from easy to difficult so that students can realize their improvement in listening, which will help them to build up their confidence. In this way teachers know how much students can cope with and how much of the unfamiliar can be included without being a threat to the students’ confidence. Before listening teachers should introduce some historical, geographical, political and cultural knowledge about the listening material to arouse students’ interests, which will better students’ understanding of the listening text. Most exercises in listening materials are multiple choices, which is a disadvantage to the improvement of speaking ability. So according to the material, we can complement some questions and use the forms of ask and answer, retell, review to give more chances for students to state their own opinions. In this way, not only can we encourage students to listen enthusiastically, but also can improve their spoken English. That is what we say, “one stone, two birds”.
The other is to make the teaching contents colorful and authentic; and to make the teaching methods flexible and various. Apart from the textbook, teachers can use English songs or movies as an auxiliary method to arouse students’ interest in listening. When selecting listening materials, teachers had better choose those materials imitating real-life situations of native speakers.
Music and movies are wonderful. Students can not only appreciate them and get away from the tense classroom atmosphere, but also can learn some knowledge of language and culture about the English-speaking countries. On the other hand, teachers can try their best to hold colorful extracurricular activities, such as English party, English corner, recite contest and so on; we can also encourage students to listen to the English radios, such as BBC, VOA. All these activities will make students find that learning English is becoming more and more meaningful and interesting.
The third one is to set some brainstorm questions which students are interested for them to discuss before listening, which will arouse their great interest in the topic. Students will try their best to state their own opinions. It is a good method to draw students’ attention on the listening text and also a good way to activate the atmosphere of the classroom. In this case, both students’ listening ability and spoken ability are improved.
4.7 Train students’ memory ability
In listening, comprehension relies on the memory of some important information. Thus, memory is indispensable to the listening comprehension. To solve the memory problem, we can adopt the following four methods:
Firstly, students must master the long and complicated sentences that are quite different from their mother tongue completely. In listening teachers should pick out the long and complicated sentences from the listening text and give further examples to show and explain the meaning of the structure in question.
