摘要:This paper discusses how to utilize listening materials effectively—based on the principles of teaching listening and the material development. Listening games and activities should be used as an interesting warming-up exercise in the listening lesson. Although they are described make few demands in terms of preparation or class time, they will play a valuable role in developing listening competence. Therefore, listening game and activities ought to be a regular part of students’ diet in the listening lesson. The listening materials for the main lecture offer a good, more easily controlled alternative to the live speaker. In order to find out the way to utilize the materials for the main lecture effectively, the teachers should operate the
guidelines step by step to make the students’ task easier. The listening materials for extensive listening are highly recommended as a complementary role in the listening.

1. Instruction
Communication in English becomes increasingly essential in daily life due to the frequent contacts between countries and people. Social demand for the students is not just restricted to reading, writing and translating, listening and speaking become more important. “More than seventy years ago, (1930, Rankin) a study showed that 11 percent of communication time was spent in writing, 15 percent in reading, 32 percent in speaking, and 42 percent of communication time was spent in listening.” [1] Therefore, Listening plays an important role in learning a foreign language.
However, in China, many teachers often neglect how to utilize the listening materials effectively. The teacher’s daily routine is presented as follows: The teacher comes into the language lab to play the tape recordings and then checks their answer to the listening tasks in the book. If there is a question that the students are unable to answer, the teacher will play the tape repeatedly until they get the correct one. Sometimes if this does not achieve the desired results, the teacher will give them the correct answer from the keys in the teacher’s book. However, the students bring the tape scripts of the listening materials to class. In addition, while listening, they use them to get the right answer.
