摘要:As a novel that describes the black experience in America and the human struggle for individuality and identity, Invisible Man stays sixteen weeks on the best-seller list. Some critics claim that it is the most important American novel that appeared after World War II.
Another folk character dating from slavery days, Brer Dog also shows up in the novel. In the Afro-American folklore the dog is an enigmatic and deceptive fellow who is usually outdone by the rabbit, his natural enemy. Throughout the novel, the dog is a threatening figure that nonetheless can be overcome. Brother Tarp, we are told, is guarded on the chain gang by a team of dogs, but gradually he befriends them and is able to escape. Peter Wheatstraw, singing “Feet Like a Monkey Blues”, gives the protagonist his view of the way things are in Harlem: “…it’s just a dog—‘cause, man, I tell you I believe it’s a bear that’s get holt to me…Man, this Harlem ain’t nothing but a bear’s den…it’s the best place in the world for you and me, and if times don’t get better soon I’m going to grab that bear and turn him every way but loose!”(Ellison, 2000: 174) Harlem may be a bear’s den or a mad dog’s house but, naturally, “Peter Wheatstraw the Devil’s Son-In-Law” knows that he will get by as long as he has “a little shit, grit and mother-wit”. Having remained conscious of his southern folk roots, he is well prepared for Harlem’s bears or “dog days”.
Black folklore seems, as Ellison describes it, basic to the portrayal of the essential spirit of black people. He explained the significance of this cultural identity in an interview:
In my novel, the narrator’s development is one through blackness to light; that is, from ignorance to enlightenment; invisibility to visibility. He leaves the South and goes North; this, as you will notice in reading Negro folktales, is always the road to freedom---the movement upward. You have the same thing again when he本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
