By collectingdata, we draw an atlas; from the atlas, people can know the distribution ofactual-potential words. 1.2 Objectives目标
Objectives of this thesis are presented as follows:First, to break the deadlock that current study of the potential words are only in thestage of “mentioning” and try to draw an atlas of potential words.Second, with the help of the technique called “minimal pairs”, the author try toestablish theoretical models which reflect the relationship between actual and potentialwords and find out their distribution.Third, to summarize ways in which new lexical forms (i.e., new sequences ofsounds) are coined to fill in the empty frames of a grid.Forth, to do a pioneering work for study of potential words, this will be a base forfuture study

 

1.3 Layout of the Thesis论文布局
This thesis consists of five chapters. The main contents of each chapter are statedas follows:Chapter one serves as an introductory part in which the author talks about therationales and objectives of this study, and finally shows the layout of the thesis.Chapter two makes a literature review of the previous studies on potential words inwhich three main aspects are stated. They are phonological, morphological andsemantic potential words respectively.Chapter three states the theoretical basis of the study of potential words. First of all,the concepts of minimal pairs are introduced. Second, according to articulation featuresof each phoneme, the author explains how to define the minimal pair proper. Finally, theEnglish phnotactics are presented.Chapter four introduces the methodology that is adopted in the thesis, includingtechniques, the scope of the study, actual-potential word distribution, classification ofthe data and establishment of theoretical models.Chapter five focuses on the statistic analysis and the relevant discussions.Chapter six is a conclusion of the whole thesis, including major findings,limitations and suggestions for future study.
