1.1 Language Learning strategy

Since 1975, various theorists have contributed to thedefinition of language learning strategy. 1.1.1 Deflnition of Language Learning Strategies

It is also defined as“A particular plan for gaining success in a particular activity, e.g., in a war, a game, or acompetition, or for personal advantage" in Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English(1998). Some people think that language learning strategy is defined as the competencethat people try to communicate with others. It is well known that since the 1970’s,studieson learning strategies have begun. In the past decades, the researches on language learningstrategy have been on the rise. The following are the definitions given by some famousresearchers.

Oxford (1989)considers the strategies as learners' behaviors. However, Weinstein and Mayer (1986) referto them as learners' physical and mental behaviors and then the exact characteristics of thebehaviors are given more concerns. Stem (1983) makes a distinction between 'strategies'and 'techniques'. The former are defined as universal methods to learn language. The latterconsist of forms of language acquisition performances which are clear in language learning.The third problem is whether these learning strategies are thought of as conscious andsubconscious.
1.1.2 Classification of Language Learning Strategies
A variety of researches focused on the language learning strategies. In theseresearches, the language learners were given instruction on how to use strategies. However,few researches were conducted to make the detailed classification of strategies.When it comes to the classification of language learning strategies, Skehan (1989)concentrates on three fields. The first field is the students' ability to incorporate themselvesinto the learning environment. Naimen et al. (1978) refer to 'an active task approach,,which is evident in such behaviors as seeking out and responding positively to learningopportunities and engaging in practice activities. ‘Classification/verification,,which Rubin(1981) puts at the top of her list of strategies, also belongs to this area. This strategyincludes checking the examples of word usage, arranging words in a sentence to checkunderstanding, looking up words in a dictionary,and paraphrasing a sentence to check understanding.
