CHAPTER FOUR RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

In this chapter, the major results of the research will be presented and analyzedsystematically. First of all, a general discussion is made concerning the recognitionprocess of auditory words, including four types of time sequences. Orthography’s rolein this process will be discussed and the cognitive process of the unrecognized wordswill also be explored. Secondly, the word frequency’s influence on the recognitionprocess of auditory words will be elaborated. Thirdly, the influence of the subjects’proficiency level on the recognition process will be fully analyzed.

4.1AGeneral Discussion of the Recognition Process ofAuditory Words

The cognitive processes of recognized auditory words are discussed through theanalysis of the four types of time sequences of the activation of the threerepresentations in the mental lexicon and orthography’s role in the recognition process. The cognitive process of the unrecognized words is also analyzed to explore thepotential reason for the failure of recognition. As is discussed in the last chapter, the recognition process of auditory words canbe generally divided into four types according to the time sequence of the activationof the three representations, with the activation of the orthographic representationbeing the clue. Among the 800 total words (20*40), the 20 subjects recognized 467 ofthem in the think-aloud protocol (see in Table 4.1), with 240 recognized through timesequence Type 1, 111 through Type 2, 88 through Type 3 and 28 through Type 4. Thepercentages tell that none of the usage of the four types is confined to individualdifferences or exceptions. In addition, every one of the 20 subjects in this researchrecognized the 40 words through more than one type of time sequence. 8 subjectsused two types while 7 of them used three types and 5 used all the four types. That isto say, the subjects recognize different words with different types of time sequences ofthe activation of the three representations, with Type 1 being the most favored one, with a percentage of 51.4.

CONCLUSION

This research probes the recognition process of auditory words andorthography’s role in this pr论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
