2.1Vocabulary and Vocabulary Knowledge
It has been admitted that vocabulary is a vital unit of language comm unicationfor humans. There is no existence of langua ge without vocabulary. It is universallyacknowledged that one’ s language co mpetence,especially one’s Englishcommunicative skills rely much on their voc abulary. Therefore, enlarging students’vocabulary knowledge of English is very im portant for both teachers and students i nsenior high schools. B arrow (1999) stated that the four traditional basic languageskills are listening, speaking, reading and writ ing. So in this part, the author willintroduce vocabulary and vocabulary knowledge, which is a fundamental part of thisstudy.What is vocabulary? It is widely known that the term vocabulary refers to allcollection of words. All collection of words means words, compound words and someidioms. In addition to these, it also in cludes the development of the language, thevariation of the words, such as som e words and phrases of regi sters, dialects andterminology and so on.In recent years, th e vocabulary teaching and vocabulary theo ry developedrapidly , linguist Lewis (1993) believed that vocabulary is not equal to the item s in adictionary, it should be viewed from a larger sense, including chunks or multi-wordchunks like lexical phrases and idiom s and made up of several words. T hat is Lewis’chunk theory, which is his gui ding thought of lexical appr oach in English languageteaching. In his point of view, it is easy to find that here vocabulary is not just a singleword or some fixed idioms, like years ago, look forward to and so on, but also thelanguage chunks which are firm ly stored in the English native speakers’ memory.Such as how are you, how do you do, see you tomorrow and so on . They ar ememorized and often used as the completed units of expressions in speakers’mind.

2.2 Corpus
Nowa days, with the rapid development of technology and popularity of computers in China, tea chers would like to using computers to help their languageteaching. Because of this reason, corpus has become more and more predominant andimportant these days. In the following part , the corpus, including its definition, typesand development will be presented.The word “corpus” or “corpora” com e from Latin, which m eans the “body”,refers to some oral texts or written texts. According to Sin clair (1991), he believedthat corpus is an electric collection o f naturally appearing language material , chosento characterize the language. In A Glossary of Corpus Linguistics, Baker (2006)assumed that “a corpus is a collection of texts which stored in an electronic database.Corpora are usually lar ge bodies of m achine-readable text containing thousands ormillions of words. ” In addition, domestic linguist Yang Huizhong (2002) believedthat corpus is a dig ital library with cer tain capacity, which based o n regulatedlinguistic principle and adopt random sa mple way to collect language texts in dailylife. The author thought that the definition of professor Yang can embody the sourcesof material, principle, approach, scale and storage way of corpus.
