Kress and Van Leeuween (2001) believed, “Modality refers to the varioussymbols used for communication and it can be achieved through a variety of channelsand medium, such as images, colors, music, technology and so on”. Van Leeuwen(2005) held that multimodality meant the combination of different semioticmodes—for example, language and music—in a communicative artifact or event.Other important representatives, Baldry and Thibault (2006), added thatmultimodality refered to a number of different ways in which different semioticresource systems were co-deployed and co-contextualized to make the textmeaningful. Zhang Delu(2009a) put forward that multimodal discourse referred to thephenomenon of communicating with symbolic resources by means of language,image, sound, action and other means, using multiple senses such as hearing, visionand touch.

It can be seen from the definition that multimodality is to study the relationshipand interdependence between different communication modes, whether they arewritten or oral, visual or auditory. Multimodality is a term which is aroused wideconcern by linguists and semioticians in recent years in western countries. It can alsobe said that it is a method of transcribing textual meaning composed of differentsemiotic patterns. To some extent, multimodality is the diversity of meaning creation activities that do not specify a given entity or text type in advance. In addition,multimodal concept is a useful measure to measure and evaluate the diversity ofmeaning formation.

2.2 Studies on Multimodal PPT

This part mainly defines the concept of Multimodal PPT, and sorts out andanalyzes the research status of multimodal at home and abroad.

2.2.1 The Definition of PPT and Multimodal PPT

This part mainly defines the concepts of PPT and Multimodal PPT.

2.2.1.1 The Definition of PPT

PPT is the abbreviation of Power Point software, which is one of the componentsof office software series produced by Microsoft Corporation in the United States. Itwas integrated into its office suite Microsoft Office in 1990. It is a powerful toolsoftware specially used for making and presenting manuscripts, speeches and otheroffice fields. Nowadays, PPT is widely used and welcomed in the fields of schooleducation, product promotion, company training and so on. Just as Hu Zhuanglin andDong Jia(2006) said, the information exchange involved by computer becomes areality. The PPT demonstration discussed in this paper is a form of informationexchange between computer and multimedia, which can achieve the effect that staticcontent in language teaching cannot achieve. This form is widely used in the field ofeducation and teaching. A complete set of PPT presentations is no longer a simplelanguage text. Although this text courseware composed of pure words still exists andis still used by some teachers, a single and boring mode has long been unable to meetthe needs of students’ learning and can not meet the needs of development.
