Chapter One Introduction
Interpersonal meaning of discourse is the function of negotiation or exchange between the addresser and the addressee,and the function of expressing the addresser’s attitude,judgement,opinion,etc.so as to establish and maintain appropriate social relationships between the addresser and the addressee.In recent years,many researches on interpersonal meaning in discourse analysis have been made by linguistics;however, the applying of interpersonal meaning to the study of political speech especially to Obama’s political speech is far from sufficient.Therefore,this thesis sheds the light on Obama’s three famous political speeches from the perspective of interpersonal meaning so as to find out how interpersonal meaning is realized in Obama’s political speeches and what functions are.
1.1 Research Background
Researches on political speeches have been done by a number of linguists both at home and abroad for a long time.However,quite a lot of the studies on this field mainly concentrate on analyzing the linguistic elements,such as how excellent the words are, how effectively the sentence structures are applied and so on.According to the writer’s survey of the academic books and articles,studies on political speech from the perspectives of mood,modality and evaluation under the the framework of interpersonal meaning are quite limited.
Systemic-functional linguistics put forward by Halliday provides people with a good way to analyze discourse from the aspect of functions of language.The core of thisfunctional grammar is the three metafunctions of language(Halliday,2000).As is explained by Li Meixia.
