Chapter One Introduction
Critical discourse analysis has always been widely applied to public discourses since its birth in the 1970s; essentially aiming at exploring the obscure ideological meanings  and  power  relations  embedded  in  discourse  (Fairclough,  1989:  28).According to Kristeva, `'the formation of any text is like collection of a piece of colored picture(Kristeva, 1969: with quotations; a text is the absorption and transition of another one 145)." In other words, a text is full of snatches or traces of other texts and as a kind of relationship, intertextuality should be given enough attention and studied intensively in literary texts as well as non-literary materials.
In 1972, the U.S. president, Richard Milhouse Nixon, paid his first visit to China, signifying the end of cold war between China and the U.S. which lasted for 25 years.Since then, seven U.S. presidents have visited China in succession during their presidency. This thesis is a critical study of the U.S. presidents' speeches delivered in China in terms of intertextuality.
1.1 Origin of the Study
The motive of starting the present study was originated by the author's strong interest in speeches delivered by U.S. presidents during their visits to China in different periods. Due to the unique and sensitive relationship between the two countries, most of the U.S. presidents' speeches in China are produced or polished by a group of professional speechwriters who are usually talented, eloquent and gorgeous rhetoricians, so that many of those speeches become the classical masterpieces even in American literary history.
As Kristeva emphasizes, all the discourses are integrated by quotations and a discourse is an absorption and transmission of another. Voices in the collected data are divided into outer voice and intra voice which refer to quotations and the speakers' own voice respectively.
