摘要:English is one of the main subjects in Chinese junior school for decades. Bothteachers and students have been working hard on English acquisition, however, theoutcome is far from satisfactory. The failure is mainly due to the inappropriatevocabulary teaching.
Conclusion
The research of teaching English as a foreign language in applied linguistics isalways subject to some uncontrollable factors since it is a branch of social science.Owing to both objective and subjective constraints during the course of theexperiment, admittedly, this research has several limitations:
1. Language changes for ever to suit the situation in which it is used, so there is nonatural speech in any absolute sense. Since lexical chunks are an intersection ofuse, function and structure, they should provide an effective unit to measurelinguistic variation. However, it is very difficult for lexical chunks to give thismeasurement, because most of them are used rather automatically so that theyare quite beyond conscious retrieval.
2. The subjects and the time of the experiment decide the next limitation. As forthe time, this teaching experiment only lasted for one term (about four months).The duration is too short and may be harmful to the study generalization sincelearning a language is a long process, no matter it is learned as a foreign, secondor first language, therefore, it is impossible for anybody to master a languageovernight. As for the subjects, only a very limited English learning population isinvolved in this experiment. The participants are only Junior 3 students who areso-called “beginners”. Compared with the overall level of the English learnersin China, their English level is relatively low. The generalization of theexperiment may be affected by this drawback.
