摘要:English is one of the main subjects in Chinese junior school for decades. Bothteachers and students have been working hard on English acquisition, however, theoutcome is far from satisfactory. The failure is mainly due to the inappropriatevocabulary teaching.

Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Significance of Vocabulary Teaching
Vocabulary is an essential part of a language. In the foreign or second language teaching, vocabulary teaching plays an important role. However, the research of vocabulary teaching didn’t develop in the field of applied linguistics until the 1970s. Wilkins (1972: 9-10) points out that “without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed”. Laufer (1986: 24) claims that “no text comprehension is possible, either in one’s native language, or in a L2 or a foreign language, without understanding the text’s vocabulary”. Krashen(1987) also clearly proposes that “vocabulary is of prime concern in foreign settings because it plays a dominant role in classroom success”. McCarthy (1990) further points out that vocabulary is the single biggest component of any language course. Without words to express a wide range of meanings, there can’t be any meaningful communication in a foreign language or a second language, no matter how successfully the learner masters the sounds of the foreign language or the second language, and no matter how well the learner learns grammar. Meara (1980) also declares that “vocabulary is indispensable when language functions as a medium for communication”.

1.1词汇教学的意义
词汇是语言的重要组成部分。在外语或第二语言教学,词汇教学中起着重要的作用。然而,词汇教学的研究并没有在应用语言学领域的发展,直到20世纪70年代。威尔金斯(1972:9-10)所指出的,“没有语法很少可以转让没有词汇没什么可以转达”。劳费尔(1986:24)声称:“没有文字的理解是可能的,无论是一个人的母语,或在L2或一门外语,不理解文本的词汇”。克拉申(1987)也明确提出,“词汇是在国外设置的首要关注,因为它起着主导作用,在课堂上的成功”。麦卡锡(1990)进一步指出,词汇量是任何语言课程最大的单一组成部分。没有用言语来表达了广泛的含义,不能有一门外语或第二语言的任何有意义的沟通,不管如何成功学习者掌握外语或第二语言的声音,再好也学习者学习语法。 Meara氏(1980)也宣称,“词汇时,是不可缺少的语言作为沟通的媒介”功能。


Currently, some instructors hold a mistaken belief that vocabulary is lessimportant than grammar. But Gass (1988) indicates that “grammatical errorsgenerally result in communication that is understood whereas lexical errors mayinterfere with communication.” Lewis (1993) also points out that “language isgrammaticalized lexis, not lexicalized grammar”. These ideas propose that lexiconis one of the language cores.In a word, vocabulary plays an important role in all aspects of languagelearning. It is certain that it is essential to master vocabulary in foreign or secondlanguage learning. Therefore, in order to achieve proficiency in a foreign orsecond language, learners should enlarge their vocabulary.


1.2 Common Problems in Junior English Vocabulary Teaching


1.2.1 Ignorance of Idiomatic Expression
Idiomatic expression means the native-like selection of expression (Pawley &Syder, 1983). In China, most of the students lack authentic or native-likeexpressions. There are two reasons for this situation. One of them is that learners,in most cases, tend to fail to understand the meaning of words accurately, becauseteachers usually teach words separately. Another reason may be that the lexicalchunk approach hasn’t been adopted in the classroom teaching. Every single wordcan easily be recognized by the students, but the meanings of the wordcombinations will make the students rather confused. Consequently, the studentsare likely to select a single English equivalent to match Chinese when they want toexpress themselves.
