摘要:This thesis consists of five chapters: chapter one introduction, chapter two literature review,chapter three methodology, chapter four results and discussions and chapter five conclusion.

Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Background of the Study
The New English Curriculum Standard sets a higher requirement onvocabulary teaching, enlarging the vocabulary to be mastered, encouraging learning vocabularyfrom the angle of practical use. Meanwhile, the State Education Commission issued Syllabus ofEnglish Course for Common Academies in 1994, and in 2000, it published Syllabus of EnglishCourse for Academies and Vocational Colleges. According to Syllabus of English Course forAcademies and Vocational Colleges, the vocabulary of vocational college students who want topass the CET 3 should reach to approximately four thousand and two hundred words. CollegeEnglish Test Band Four and Six require the students to acquire five thousand to six thousandwords. It sounds very easy to acquire four thousand words, but this is easier said than done. ForChinese learners of English, the small English vocabulary size is the “bottle-neck” of the targetlanguage learning. What’s more, vocabulary is usually considered to be a big headache forChinese university students, especially for vocational college students. Although they may havespared no efforts to remember vocabulary, they still complain that learning vocabulary is a prettydifficult task. Thus, the English vocabulary teaching in vocational college is very important. To helpvocational college students improve their English vocabulary proficiency, it is very important toknow their vocabulary learning style and consider the internal factors in their process of learningEnglish. This thesis tries to apply the self-efficacy theory to college English vocabulary teachingclass systematically and its feasibility and effectiveness will be approved through an empiricalstudy.

1.2 Objective and Significance of the Study
There are five major concerns for this thesis on self-efficacy and English vocabularyteaching.First, English plays an increasingly important role in the international communication andvocabulary is the first and most important step in language learning. However, the learning andteaching of vocabulary never aroused the same degree of interest within language teaching asgrammar, listening, speaking, reading, and writing, which received considerable attention fromresearchers and educators. This thesis focuses on the study of English vocabulary and tries todevelop new ways for the teaching and learning of English vocabulary.Second, the present studies about English vocabulary teaching and learning are mainlyconcerned about the effect of environment factors, teacher factors, and other external factors butneglect the effect of students’ internal factors. This study tries to investigate the effect ofstudents’ internal factors on their learning of English vocabulary and on the teaching ofvocabulary.Third, few researchers have ever paid attention to the combination of self-efficacy withEnglish vocabulary teaching. Therefore, this study is in an attempt to apply Bandura’sself-efficacy theory to English vocabulary teaching to explore new and effective ways ofpromoting vocabulary teaching and students’ vocabulary learning.

2.1 The Theory of Self-efficacy
