摘要:Since synthetic way of expressing causativity can help Chinese EFL learners toexpress more idiomatically, it is necessary to study lexicalized causative verbs.
Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
The concept of causation is a universally existed semantic category in humanlanguage. Causativity is a cognitive presentation of how human beings recognizecause and effect relations all over the world. The relations of cause can be easily seenbetween and among objective things. Therefore, for EFL learners, the acquisition ofexpressing causativity is of great importance.“Meaning consists of conceptual content and the way of particular construing”,stated by Langacker (2006). Different ways of construing contributes to the diversityof causative expressions. Thus, the expression of causativity can be varied.Although linguists hold different perspectives toward the classification of thesecausative expressions, Banczerowski’s categorization is most explanatory andcomplete. Banczerowski (1980) states that causativity can be divided into twocategories by its linguistic reflections: analytic causativity and synthetic causativity.In other word, the former depends on a causative sentence structure or causativephrase to describe a causative concept or meaning, while the latter relies on acausative verb.

1.2 Research Objective
Since synthetic way of expressing causativity can help Chinese EFL learners toexpress more idiomatically, it is necessary to study lexicalized causative verbs.English speakers depend on lexicalized causative verbs to express causativity in asynthetic way.Compared with Chinese, English native speakers are prone to utilize syntheticexpressions. Synthetic expressions refer to expressing ideas by the means of lexiconsrather fixed sentence structures or phrases. Lexicalization is the most frequently usedstrategy to give synthetic description. Regarding to lexicalized causative verbs, thereare two types:affix-shift class and identical-shift causative verbs, according toBanczerowski’s categorization.Although plenty of researchers at home and aboard have made someachievements in the study of causativity, only a few scholars are interested in theacquisition of synthetic causativity, and even few researchers studied in theacquisition of lexicalized causative verbs which are the main approach to expresssynthetic causativity.Thus, this thesis focuses on the investigation in multi-level Chinese EFLlearners’ acquisition of two types of English lexicalized causative verbs: affix-shiftedcausative verbs and identical-shifted causative verbs. Besides, this study is alsoaimed to look into the causes for current acquisition situation, so as to put forwardrelative useful teaching and learning implications.

2.1 The Definition of Causativity
Causativity describes the linguistic property of causation. It generates whenhuman try to express causation with languages. There are many variations ofexpressing causativity, in terms of the degree of causativity.Scholars have disputes in the origin of causativity in English. Derivationalgrammarians pointed out that causativity derives from syntactic structures.Nevertheless, lexicologists believed that causativity is incorporated within theformation of lexicon.Causation is a common phenomenon in human languages, stated by Pinker(1989). Causative constructions are the expressions for experiential conceptualizationof causative events.
