摘要:As it is shown in “Basic Requirement for English Course in Vocational andTechnical Colleges (2000)”’ the aim of English learning in these colleges is to helpthe learners develop the ability to conduct simple oral and written communicationwith others in their daily life and work, to read and translate materials in relative field.

Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Background of the Study
A recent survey shows that there are about 375 million people in the world speakEnglish as a native language, and another billion are learning it as a second language.In the 21 si century, the most popular language is highly likely to be English. With thedevelopment of economic globalization. EFL learning and teaching have becomeincreasingly significant.It is a pity that large numbers of people are still unable to communicate withothers in English after years of English study. The traditional way of teaching focusestoo much on the learning of grammar and syntax, thus ignoring the practical use oflanguage in real context. In the traditional English classroom, language teachersundoubtedly have absolute authority, and control the whole classroom. However,students are Just “neglected audiences" who make note-taking and sometimes providetheir laughter and applause due to admiration. Teachers always explain the vocabulary,text- subject, etc. to learners and learners just accept all the information the teacherhas conveyed mechanically with little self-thinking and with few communicationsbetween learners and teacher and among learners themselves.Recent years, there are many reforms in English teaching and learning both inmiddle schools and universities in which leaching syllabuses and textbooks all getmodification. It is no doubt that through these measures, some positive results havebeen achieved, nevertheless, with the extension of enrollment in universities andcolleges, the number of students is disproportionate with that of teachers. As a result,the traditional mode of English teaching is still prevail in many universities andcolleges. In many colleges, especially in vocational colleges, these reforms have justbecome a kind of formality. It might gradually lead to the marginalization of Englishin those colleges, which is unfavorable to higher education in China.

1.2 Significance of the Study
As it is shown in “Basic Requirement for English Course in Vocational andTechnical Colleges (2000)”’ the aim of English learning in these colleges is to helpthe learners develop the ability to conduct simple oral and written communicationwith others in their daily life and work, to read and translate materials in relative field.That's to say. students in this period should train the five basic skills of listening,speaking, reading, writing and translation and improve their practical communicativecompetence in real context. Obviously, the traditional teaching mode has been unable 。to meet the demand.It is well known that children learn their native language through communicatingand interacting with people around. So mastering a language needs a context of socialinteraction. The experience of learning one's first language can provide a Referencefor the foreign language learning. As it is mentioned above,English learning invocational colleges is facing a crisis of marginalization, which presents a bigchallenge both for English leaching and English teachers. As for the basiccomponent——vocabulary, it can't be taught just by meaning explanation of teachersand learners' passive acceptance. This kind of process is so boring and.can not makesure whether the students get a real understanding of the word so as to use it properlyin daily life and work.
