4.1 The relationship between dynamic meaning and pragmaticenrichment
As the production of pragmatic reference，the dynamic meaning of a word is themeaning provided by the entity concept which is obtained from the communicativeprocess in which the hearer adjusts the encoded concept of the word to the contextualinformation under the guidance of relevant expectation. This kind of meaning is notembedded in the linguistic system，because apart from the intake of language information,the pragmatic reference also is supposed to receive the information besides languageinformation such as the information obtained in the perceptual process, the contextualinformation obtained from the long-term memory and the like (ibid: II).On the ground that the word meaning keeps changing and the context keepschanging as well, it is generally accepted that the contributions made by the staticinterpretation of lexical semantics for the understanding of word meaning is limited.With the purpose of making a better interpretation of the word in use, the lexicalsemantics has got to combine and interact with the pragmatics. A new discipline---lexical pragmatics comes into being and gets the rapid development in recent years as thecombination of the lexical semantics and the pragmatics. The goal of lexical pragmaticsis to interpret the dynamic meaning produced in the communicative process. Moreover,this kind of meaning is different from the regular encoded meaning and it keeps changingin the way of pragmatic enrichment in the communicative process. In a word, lexicalpragmatics tries to account for the interpretation of dynamic meaning of a word in theway of pragmatic enrichment.

This thesis analyzes the phenomenon of pragmatic enrichment in dynamic meaningof English words from the perspective of lexical pragmatics, and makes an account forthe process of dynamic meaning. Here are answers to the questions raised in ChapterTwo.What is dynamic meaning? It is gaierally acknowledged that word meaning differsfrom context to context, so apart from its static meaning there exists another meaning ofword, that is dynamic meaning which is influenced by various factors of context duringcommunication. On the basis of its litCTal meaning and prototypical meaning, a worddevelops its dynamic meaning which adjusts better to the context and makes sure theaccomplishment of conversation. What's more, in verbal communication, RelevanceTheory put forward by Sperber & Wilson provides a very good interpretation andexplanation to the comprehension of the phenomenon of pragmatic enrichment in thedynamic meaning of a word.
