4.1 Analysis of Statistical Features
Yang Huizhong (2002:153) pointed out that the main statistical features includingbytes, tokens, types，type/token ratio, standardized type/token ratio, average word length,sentences，sentence length，standard deviation of sentence length，paragraphs.etc. As thestudy of this paper is to analysis the lexical features of the offshore petroleum English,so the word length, type/token ratio and frequency are the key points of statisticalfeatures in this chapter. Lexical sophistication and level of formality can also be measured by word length.It is commonly believed that long words are more complicated than short words, andthat the longer the words are, the more complicated and formal the texts will be. Wordlength is usually calculated by computing the ratio between the number of letters andthe number of words. Through running wordlist, the average word lengths of twocorpora are shown in the following table.

Conclusion

The present corpus-based study is an investigation into English words used inoffshore petroleum research articles. In this paper, on the basis of a scientific researchdesign and detailed data analyses, the author analyzed and discussed the offshorepetroleum English words based on a one million professional corpus from qualitativeand quantitative angle.From the quantitative angle, the author analyzed the word length，words frequency,lexical density and keywords of the offshore petroleum English words. The analysisresults reflect the features of formality, objectivity, and complexity in offshorepetroleum English articles.
