On the other hand, due to the multiplesenses of English prepositions, some scholars have made strenuous efforts to determinethe senses of English prepositions from contextual features.

2.2 Previous studies on word sense disambiguation
Word Sense Disambiguation is the process of identifying the meanings of words incontext. In the 1950s when people had started to use computer to cope with language,WSD has been an interest and concern. To a large extent, it can fulfill most naturallanguage processing tasks. Therefore, it has been studied in almost every application ofnatural language processing, such as machine translation, information retrieval,grammatical analysis, speech and text processing and knowledge acquisition. In recentyears WSD is becoming increasingly important in new research areas such asbioinformatics and the Semantic Web. In general, there are four conventional approachesto WSD, namely dictionary- and knowledge-based methods, supervised methods,semi-supervised or minimally-supervised methods and unsupervised methods. Manylinguists at home and abroad have made considerable process on the study of the WSD.
