Now the mainstream culture in Australia is western culture. It has long been influenced by British and European culture but also influenced by indigenous Australian culture and other immigrant culture.

Forming a harmonious multicultural society is not easy at all. The policies made by the government, on one hand should respect multi-ethnic groups’ interests and culture, on the other hand should also follow the law of the country. Multiculturalism emphasizes the multiplicity of culture, but it pays more attention to the unity of the country.  “State interests are defined in the context of internationally held norms and understandings about what is good and appropriate.”  (Mrtha Finnemore, 2)⑦. Whenever the interest of country conflict with the interest of nation, one should regard the interest of country at the first place. So a multi-ethnic society must handle the relations between country and ethnic groups. Respect and acknowledge different culture’s contribution is a good measure took by Australia government. Now the international society generally advocate multiculturalism to reflect in globalization each country and each nation’s self-consciousness has promoted the acceptance of multi-culture as well as the international society has reached agreement to protect, inherit and develop the diversity of ethnic cultures. “our capacity for culture, which we define here simply as socially transmitted information, clearly separates us from other species.” (Ruth Mace, Clare J. Holden and Stephen Shennan, 4) ⑧ There are also other ways to promote the communication of different culture like the multicultural festival.

All in all, as peace and development are still the mainstream of the world; compromise and understanding，respect and live in harmony is a trend of nation relationship. Multiculturalism still has a long way to go, and there are still many problems exist in multi-ethnic societies. Ethnic problems always are very sensitive and quite important. “Ethnic problems become ethnic conflicts as the power of the state weakens”(Michael Edward Brown, 181).⑨Ethnic problems are protracted and complicated. It is very important to deal with it. “culture can matter in explaining variability in economic outcomes and in more ways than previous research has suggested.” (Paul J. Ferraro and Ronald G. Cummings, 217) ⑩ Proper means dealing with multi-culture can help a country to promote its economic development.

All in all, in forming a multi-ethnic society, a country still should try its best to make proper policies and take practical measures, many ethnic organizations in the society also can help to promote the respect and communication of different culture and make the multi-ethnic country stable and harmonious.
