plans to learn a language has to learn the related culture. However, what is language? What is culture? To presume to define language adequately would be very difficult. People have used language to communicate for thousands of years, but in many ways, we are only just beginning to understand the complex nature of this aspect of human life. Linguistic scholars have given a number of definitions of language from different points of view. To sum up, the definition is “language is a system of arbitrary vocal symbols used for human communication”. It is not so difficult to define culture as well as language. We should say whatever refers to people’s life is culture. Every aspect of people’ life is been influenced by culture. The relationship between language and culture: On one hand, language is a special part of culture, a symbol of expressing culture, the carrier of conveying cultures, and an indivisible part of culture. That is to say“no culture, no language ” ; on the other hand , language is influenced by culture and culture is reflected by language. People who want to understand a language must understand the culture it represents; people who want to comprehend the culture well have to master the related language. In a word, language and culture are always influencing each other, they are indivisible. The relationship between them shows that a language teacher must be a cultural teacher. However, strictly, cultural teaching is not an independent course, is a part of language teaching. For recent English teaching, what is more, we should teach students the target language culture (here it refers to English culture). However, some teachers think simply that students should understand domestic culture fairly, and the students cannot understand English cultures well. In English teaching, we should carry out two-way cultural input, that is to say, turning the process of language teaching to the process of gradually comprehension and understanding to the target language culture and mother tongue culture.

2.2 Principles of cross culture in English teaching

    Many Chinese and foreign scholars'' viewpoints both refer to the basic principles of language teaching. For example, Chinese scholars Shu Dingfang and Zhuang Zhixiang advocate that cultural input must be based on practice principle, period principle and suit principle. Zhao Houxian put forward his four principles that should be obeyed in foreign language teaching : cognition principle , assimilation principle , comparison principle and tolerance principle .In the process of two-way cultural input teaching , we should respect English-speaking countries’ cultures first, seek the common ground while maintaining difference, and discard the dross and select the essence.

( 1 )     We should know that every nation’s cultures have been passed and deposited

by several generations; their forming has a long history. Chinese and English cultures both have their own characters. Just be based on the principle of respecting each other, we can scan and absorb another nation’s cultural essence with an even-tempered psychology.
