1.1.2 Academic Appeal
The New Basic Requirements for College English Teaching puts forward explicitly that we should take the cultivation of students' quality on culture and the teaching of international culturalknowledge into adequate consideration, and the aim of the college English teaching is to develop thestudents' comprehensive application abilities, especial the ability in listening and speaking, so as to helpthem to use English as a tool of exchanging orally and in written form effectively in the future workingand social communication, and to enhance their comprehensive cultural qualities, so as to help themadapt to the demand of the social development and international exchanging of China. It also points outthat the final purpose of college English teaching is to develop the students' transcultural exchangingcompetence.According to the statistics of Kachru B.B.[亏]in 1992, people who speak English language as thefirst language amounts to 32-38 million, as the second language to 15-30 million, while as a foreignlanguage to 10-100 million. The numbers for English as a second language and a foreign language arelargely greater than that of English as a first language. According to GraddoFs researching forecast,in the following 50 years, the number of the people using English as a second language will increasefrom 23.5million to 46.2million. That is to say, English is to be widely used in different countries,different cultures and in different layers. Therefore, instead of a language emperor, English shouldserve as a linguistic tool for exchanging among different countries, different peoples and differentcultures.


1.2 Research Questions
We use English for international communication, however, as people from non-English-speakingcountries, we often involve our native cultural contents in our conversations consciously orunconsciously even though we are speaking in English. Thus it poses questions here: where does thenative culture involved in our English conversation come from? Does it have any relations with theEnglish teaching activity,especially with the introduction of the native culture in English teachingactivity? To better answer these questions, we believe that we should conduct researches on thefollowing questions first:
1. What is the students' ability to express traditional Chinese culture in English? Or to say, what is thestudents' output situation? And can be demonstrated in which aspects?
2. What is the current situation of the traditional Chinese culture being covered in college Englishbooks? Or to say, what's the students' input situation? And can be demonstrated in which aspects?
3. Are there any correlations between the output and input of Chinese culture? If there is any, whatthey are?


Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 Literature on Culture Teaching
As Harrion and Huntington note, “the term ‘culture,,of course,has had multiple meanings indifferent disciplines and different contexts". As Lonner and Malpass point out, these definitions rangefrom complex and fancy definitions to simple one such as "culture is the programming of the mind” or"culture is the human-made part of the environment"The word culture comes from the Latin root colere, (to inhabit, to cultivate, or to honor).
