Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 Foreign studies of college English teaching mode
There are many studies about listening-teaching methodology of L2- In the 20thcentury, some experts and scholars began to attach importance to listening teachingmode of L2. With the development of language theory and language learning theory,among four skills, listening is valued by many researchers and regarded as a veryimportant part of language teaching especially for the second language. In the 1960s,applied linguists began to realize that listening is an important channel of languagelearners to obtain some vital data of L2. The style of listening teaching becomes moreand more important, and the teaching mode also appears diversified, such as theAudio-Lingual Method (ALM) that focuses on presentation of models;Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) that focuses on authentic conversation;Content-Based Instruction (CBI) that focuses on rich input; and the Natural Approachthat focuses on comprehensible input (Rost,2002). Holec (1981) put up with “twoteaching goals,,that are composed of language competence and communication skillsand how to leam. Benson (1998) mentions "autonomy" which emphasizes theautonomy of students and demands the students as the centre in the process oflistening teaching.

2.2 Domestic studies of college English listening-teachingmode
There are a lot of studies on college English teaching modes. Among them,most of them are presented in the form of theory, so actually,most of these theoriesare not put into practice or applied to the course of teaching listening. In a word, asfor domestic studies on English listening teaching, different people have differentopinions. Fan Yanlin (2008) emphasized that listening is extremely important incollege English teaching. Teaching and testing are the supplement for each other.Where there is a teaching, there is a test. How to make the test become an effectiveevaluation method of teaching is crucial, which requires scientific test theory toguide. Communicative language testing theory can provide referential principles forlistening tests. It mainly discusses using the rule of authenticity of communicativelanguage testing theory to guide how to design a listening test. Chen Jia (2008)studied the interactive mode of listening comprehension in college English listeningteaching. The study is based on three modes of listening comprehension: bottom-upmode, top-down mode, and interaction mode.
