Chapter Two Theoretical Underpinnings


2.1 Brief Introduction to Reception Aesthetics
The outstanding representative of Phenomenology is Edmund Husserl. He is against theidea that subjectivity and objectivity are opposed to each other and suggests that all the subjectsare intentional subjects by nature. Another representative of Phenomenology Roman Ingarden isthe student of Edmund Husserl. He has Husserl’s theory go further. He asserts that thesubjectivity and objectivity of art are based on the intentionality. The literary work is the objectof pure intentionality. That is to say, the literary work is the common result of its writer’sconsciousness and reader’s consciousness. The writers present their opinions, likes and dislikesin the course of writing their literary works. Meanwhile, the readers through their act of readingaim at understanding the literary works. Ingarden also puts forwards the concepts ofindeterminacy and blank. Indeterminacy and blank exist in every aspect of the literary workwhich will invite the readers to fill or complement. This kind of activity is called concretizationaccording to Ingarden. By the way of readers’ intentional restructurization the artistic value andaesthetic capability of the literary work will be fulfilled. Readers’ existing experience,knowledge and reading skills affect the restructurization process. It is obvious that an individualreader may have his own understanding of the same literary work in his specific way. Similarly,the same reader may not get the same feelings of the same material in different time. Ideas ofPhenomenological Aesthetics are the necessary theoretical basis of reader-response theory inReception Aesthetics.

2.2 English Reading Teaching based on Reception Aesthetics
In this part our attention will be paid to discussing the reading teaching in classroom basedon Reception Aesthetics from three aspects: text, students and teacher. The textbook used for reading material is made up of articles from different authors. Thetextbook can be considered as the text. The editor of the textbook and the authors areencouraging readers to grasp the implied meaning in the text. What’s more, there areconsiderable blanks or indeterminacies left in the text. If the teachers and students don’trespond to the appealing structure, there is no value for the text. The actualization of text isdecided by the process of reader’s reading. Teachers and students have the freedom to choosetheir reading material on condition that they have interest in it. It can be a literary work, a novel,an essay and so on.
