Chapter Four Further Suggestions


4.1 Advantage and Disadvantage of the Application of ReceptionAesthetics
Reading abilities have always been important part in students’ English learning. Inapplying Reception Aesthetics to reading teaching, it is obvious from the previous research thatthe students’ reading comprehension level could have been upgraded. Reception Aesthetics canbe used as an instructional tool which can assist teachers in developing a student-centeredenvironment, which will meet various students’ needs. With such a tool, teachers can adjust theteaching pace, teach exact reading skills and also provide immediate feedback; meanwhilelearners can get actively involved in reading activities. In spite of that, the teachers cannot bereplaced but rather given the opportunity to demonstrate effective reading instruction. There is not so much research on applying Reception Aesthetics to college English readingso the teachers have to spend much time in thinking of various ways of how to make use of iteffectively. Sometimes some methods are effective among some students, but they might not beso effective among other students. Teachers have to think of the reasons and solutions. The costand complexity of the technology can not be underestimated.In most universities the students learn English for four terms. The experiment cannot lastlonger than two years. After two years the teachers cannot be informed whether students’reading abilities can get improved or get fallen behind or not.

Conclusion


To sum up, such a teaching reform may be an effective way to carry out thequality-oriented English reading teaching which focuses on the learners’ development inall-round way and lays great emphasis on students’ subjectivity in learning. In this aspect theauthor just made a tentative research and the research is limited to college English reading.There are many possibilities to apply Reception Aesthetics to English listening, speaking andwriting. Owing to the author’s limited knowledge and experience, the research leaves muchroom to explore in later studies. Firstly, the time lasts only for four months. The span is a littleshort in some sense and there might be some uncertainty. So it is difficult to determine theeffectiveness of reading skills. Secondly, the subjects are from the same university. Thestudents’ number is only 104. The number of the subjects is too small. To ensure theeffectiveness of one experiment it is essential to have more subjects.
