Conclusion


Language transfer has always been one of the top research fields in Second LanguageAcquisition. Forward transfer and backward transfer are opposite-directional languagetransfers at the same level. Forward transfer has captured great attention from the researchersand scholars both at home and abroad. However, much less importance has been attached tothe studies on backward transfer compared to those on forward transfer. Very few papers andtheses concerning English influence on L2 learners' Chinese can be found in the domesticworld, let alone the studies encompassing empirical experiment and analysis from thecognitive perspective. In this study, two groups of participants took part in the Chinese syntaxjudging experiment in which their response time and judging selections for each set of thetesting sentences were recorded. The experimental group 1 was made up of advanced Englishlearners who might have more or less developed the integrated language system in theirindividual mind; the experimental group 2 consisted of close Chinese monolingual studentswho only had good foundation in Chinese so that there might be only one single languagesystem in each of their brains. Five distracter sentences were designed to mingle with tentesting sentences in the experiment, and the participants made judgments based on theirpresent language knowledge at their first reaction. The main findings of the experimentconcerning response time and judging selection are listed as follows:Findings in response time recording,
a) The average response time of the experimental group 2 was generally longer than thatof the experimental group 1 with two exceptions in sentence eight (pronoun with a clause asattributive ahead) and sentence thirteen (free subordinate clause sequence in complexsentence).
