摘要:Mandarin Chinese (Chinese hereafter) and English are two typologicallydifferent languages. For a native Mandarin Chinese speaker, speaking Englishinvolves the acquisition and activation of a different language system.
Chapter Four Research and Discussion
4.1 Research Methodology
The two major research areas explored in this thesis include investigations oftransitive-sentence priming and dative-sentence priming in both native Englishlanguage speakers and Chinese learners of English. Different from most previousstudies, the research employs natural language data instead of experimental data. Thelanguage data selected mainly comes from two corpora, ICG-GB and SECCL2.0, onwhich the English language investigations are based. By comparison and analysis, thethesis hopes to find some evidence on how language is represented and processed inthe Chinese-English bilingual group, and thus to make some contribution to the studyof the model of language representation and processing in bilingual speakers oftypologically different languages. In order to explore the mechanism in bilingual speakers, proper language data isessential in the study, since the quality of natural language data bears directly on theresult of the research. By careful selection, two corpora were adopted in this project,ICG-GB and SECCL2.0.

Conclusion
By launching a corpus-based investigation, this thesis has focused on syntacticpriming in bilingual speakers’ sentence production in order to detect the syntacticrepresentation and processing of in English Chinese bilinguals. Through transitive anddative language priming and production, the thesis has worked out a model oflemma-based syntactic representation. Though languages differ, combinatorial nodesare shared. It is relatively easy for learners to acquire second language structures thathave identical syntactic construction compared to their native language. The difficultylies in the acquisition of new combinatorial nodes, which requires effort and repetition.Proper repetition can strengthen new combinatorial nodes and therefore contribute toL2 proficiency. Hopefully, the research and the model generated can offer someevidence bearing on L2 acquisition and, at the same time, provide some help for L2education.
