This thesis mainly concentrates on the analysis of the polysemy of the Englishcaused-motion construction. Goldberg (1995) has pointed out that there are various butrelated senses of the caused-motion construction. However, Goldberg only proposedthat the sense “X causes Y to move Z” is the central sense and the others are theextensions from it. This thesis is based on Goldberg’s construction grammar and someconcepts in cognitive linguistics to analyze the motivation of the polysemy and theformation of the extension from the central sense to the other senses. This thesisdescribes two mechanisms that are related to the polysemy of the caused-motionconstruction: one is the conceptualization and lexicalization, the other is the metonymyand coercion. The latter one is the dominating one. In the conceptualization andlexicalization aspects, the concept of the caused-motion is the outcome of thecaused-motion event in the physical world. The conceptualization of the caused-motionevent is a process of mapping of sequence in nature. The force image schema andblending play an important role in the formation and construal of the polysemy of thecaused-motion concept. Besides, the integration between verb meaning and constructionmeaning is another important mechanism that motivates the polysemy of thecaused-motion construction. When there are conflicts between the verb meaning andconstruction meaning, the metonymic coercion occurs. Under this circumstance, boththe verb meaning and the construction meaning coerce each other to get a qualifiedmeaning. Thus the polysemy of the English caused-motion construction occurs, and theEnglish caused-motion construction has various but related senses.
