摘要:With the rise of intercultural communication in China, many researches onstereotype have been conducted by Chinese scholars. They were carried out mainlyfrom two perspectives—psychological perspective and intercultural communicationperspective.

ogist Sapir, who regards language as themost basic nature of people, defines language in his work, Language: An Introductionto the Study of Speech as “a purely human and non-instinctive method ofcommunicating ideas, emotions and desires by means of a system of voluntarilyproduced symbols” (Sapir, 1921:48). Chomsky, who is an American linguist, gives arepresentative definition of language in his book, Aspects of the Theory of Syntax.“From now on I will consider language to be a set (finite or infinite) of sentences, each finite in length and constructed out of a finite set of elements” (Chomsky,1965:68). In 1992, famous linguistic David Crystal defines language as “thesystematic, conventional use of sounds, signs, or written symbols in a human societyfor communication and self-expression”.

2.2 Culture and Communication

2.2.1 Communication
Definitions and relevant researches on culture have been illustrated above. Now,let’s turn our attention to communication.Communication is the basis of all human contact, but due to its complexity, it’shard to find a single definition. Up to now, more than 100 definitions ofcommunication have been given by different scholars. Generally speaking, communication refers to the share or exchange of information, views, thoughts, orfeelings by speech, visuals, signals, writing, or behavior. Communication is thevehicle by which meanings are conveyed, identity are composed and reinforced, and feelings are expressed. In this thesis communication will be defined as “a systematic, dynamic process in which meanings are created and reflected in human interactionwith symbols” (Wood, 1994:28).This definition not only gives a more complex and direct view of whatcommunication is, but also reveals its some characteristics. (1) Communication is adynamic process. It meansthat communication is an ongoing,ever-changing activity. In any communicationevent, the sender and the receiver of messages constantly shift from being encoders todecoders and the message also be changed in each turn of interaction. (2)Communication is systematic.

Chapter Four Implications for Culture Teaching and Learning of English Majors

4.1 Raising Cultural Awareness
We are unable to observe other cultures without culture. Unfortunately we areblind to other cultures once we acquire it. Actually this points out the “cultureunconsciousness” that similar to Carl Jung's concept of “collective unconsciousness”which is embodied in stereotypes greatly. So the study of cultural stereotype ca论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
