Chapter Four Improvement of Defining Hand Verbs in Internal Oriented Chinese-English Learners’ Dictionaries 

4.1  The  Present  Situations  of  Hand  Verbs  in  Chinese-English Dictionaries  

The  subjects  of  the  thesis  are  three  internal  oriented  Chinese-English Dictionaries  published  in  recent  years.  They  are  The  Chinese-English  Dictionary, The New Chinese-English Dictionary, and A Chinese-English Dictionary.  The Chinese-English Dictionary (3rd edition, TCED3 for short ) is published by Shanghai Translation Publishing House  in  2010.  The  Chinese-English  Dictionary  is large-scale  comprehensive  dictionary  which  is  a  blend  of  arts,  science,  engineering, agriculture,  medicine,  law,  business  and  other  subjects.  It  has  been  regarded  as  the most  authoritative  one  among  domestic  Chinese-English  Dictionaries.  The  third edition  of  The  Chinese-English  Dictionary  has  240,000  entries,  in  which  there  are about  10,000 single  character  entries,  and  230,000  multi-character  entries.  Compared with the first version, the third edition of The Chinese-English Dictionary increases  about  15000  new  words.  With  the  rapid  development  of  the  emerging culture , the compilation of dictionaries faces huge challenges, in which the first one is the problem how to keep the freshness of vocabularies. Liu Gusun, English expert, professor  of  Fudan  University,  points  out  in  the  preface,  that  with  the  higher frequence  of  commuication  between  China  and  the  world,  such  a  Chinese-English Dictionary is expected to play a role at avoiding misunderstanding on both sides, and seizing more opportunities to speak out. It just becomes the biggest characteristic of the third edition of The Chinese-English Dictionary.

Conclusion

By  this  study,  it  is  found  that  the  definition  of  hand  verbs  in  the  present Chinese-English Dictionaries has some drawbacks, like the inconformity of the target language and the original language, lack of pragmatic information, non-equivalence of  equivalents,  etc.  Under  the  guidance  of  Multidimensional  Definition  Model,  the optimization  of  definition  of  hand  verbs  from  the  structures  of  Multidimensional Definition  Model  is  constructed  to  remedy  the  shortcomings  in  the  traditional definition model and help with the productivity of the users.
