lysis  of Lawrence’s  poems  can  enrich  the  domain  of  the  dynamic  researches  adopting  the figure-ground  theory.  Since  the  dynamic  figure-ground  theory  has  been  introduced  to  home only few years ago, not too many of studies adopting this theory were carried out, hence this thesis can be seen as a supplement to further increase the credibility and explanatory power of figure-ground theory in the literary works. Besides, the poems of Lawrence contain abundant images which can be seen as figures, and through a linguistic analysis from the perspective of dynamic figure-ground theory, the cultural connotations and artistic conceptions of the poems can be further embodied;  and the cognitive motivations of the readers can be better  grasped, hence  the  poems  will  be  appreciated  from  a  more  reasonable  and  comprehensive  angle. Therefore, this thesis can provide a new angle for analyzing Lawrence’s poems.   On  the  other  hand,  in  practical  level,  this  thesis  meets  the  tendency  the  visual  era  at present. The exploration on relations of figure and ground is exactly a powerful demonstration on  the  combination  of  literary  texts  and  visual  arts.  The  cognitive  analysis  on  literary  works with figure-ground theory can help the readers to feel the creation in a more intuitionistic way and  form  their  own  image  schema.  Therefore,  this  kind  of  study  will  adapt  the  developing trend of the present visual era. Besides, this thesis explores Lawrence’s poems from a new angle,  and  can  be  seen  as  a  solid  attempt  to  combine  the  linguistic  theory  and  the  literary works,  which  will  help  people  further  understand  the  poet  status  of  Lawrence  and  the importance of his poems, and will provide certain enlightening significance on Lawrence’s cultural recognition.

Chapter 2 Literature Review 

In  this  chapter,  the  studies  of  figure-ground  theory  and  D.  H.  Lawrence’s  poems  are reviewed in terms of their studies at home and abroad respectively.  Through the reviews, the research  gaps  of  these  two  parts  can  be  deduced,  which  can  be  seen  as  the  rationale  of  this thesis. 

2.1 Current Studies of Figure-Ground Theory
