ems  is  introduced,  and  the  qualitative  methodology adopted  in  this  study  is  provided,  with  the  analyzing  process  for  each  poem  included.  In addition, this chapter provides the detailed analysis of the sample pomes in Last Poems from the figure-ground perspective, and tries to make the analysis of Lawrence’s poems elevated to a cognitive level. 

4.1 Introduction to the Study Materials

The corpus of the present study is selected from  The Complete Poems of D.H. Lawrence published firstly in 1994 by Wordsworth Poetry Library. In the collection of Last Poems, there are totally 67 poems, which are divided into three parts according to the time sequence.  It is worth to be mentioned that since the poems were written at the last period of Lawrence’s life, and  the  writing  time  of  each  poem  cannot  be  deduced  exactly;  hence  the  division  is  carried out  approximately  by  the  sequential  numbers  of  the  poems;  and  moreover,  for  many  pieces the  keywords  are  clearly  closely  related  with  the  former  or  latter  ones,  so  it  is  obvious  that these pieces should be divided into one part.  In  this study, the author numbers each poem in each part, and the whole collection of Last Poems can be demonstrated as the following table.

Conclusion  

As  a  newly-developed  theory  which  was  derived  from  the  study  of  psychology, figure-ground  theory  has  testified  its  explanatory  power  in  many  fields.  When  adopted  into the  linguistic  study,  this  theory  offered  the  scholars  a  new  angle  in  defining  the  different structures  in  linguistics.  When  Stockwell  further  developed  the  static  figure-ground  theory into dynamic, studies on literary works begin to reassess the importance of stylistic devices in the  reader’s  appreciation towards novels  and poems.  Therefore this dynamic figure-ground theory  quickly  gained  its  vitality  in  stylistic  studies.  During  the  reading  process,  readers  can have their own interpretation subjectively according to the variation of images; however, the dynamic  figure-ground  theory,  as  an  important  branch  of  cognitive  poetics,  provides  the readers with the motivations of appreciating literary works in a scientific way.
