5.1 Interactive Coherence of Perlocutions  

As discussed in Chapter two, discoursal coherence is achieved at the three levels: locutions,  illocutions,  and  perlocutions.  In  Austin’s  view,  the  perlocutionary  acts  are related  to  the  consequence  or  effects  on  the  part  of  the  receiver,  which  is  performed on  the  receiver.  A  perlocutionary  act  is a  nonlinguistic  act  performing  the  effects  on action, belief and thought of hearer based on the consequence of the locutionary and illocutionary  acts  (Coulthard,  1977:  18).  Under  both  linguistic  and  nonlinguistic contexts,  the  mental  interaction  between  producer  and  receiver  establishes  an interactive  coherence  or  a  negotiating  coherence  (Anderson,  1995).  Here  interactive coherence  can  be  regarded  as  a  cognitive  process  of  the  producer’s  intentions  or persuasive effects and the response of receiver’s. Perlocutionary act depends not only on the language producer, but also on receiver’s acceptance or response. The  effects  of  locutionary  and  illocutionary  acts  is  usually  demonstrated  by  the “achievement  of  a  perlocutionary  object”  or  “production  of  a  perlocutionary  sequel” (Edmonson, 1981:43). The coherence at this level is considered as a cognitive process in the mind that the speaker produces the language and the receiver comprehends that.
