And students in University (including undergraduates and postgraduates) are a large group on language using, and their attitudes toward letter words represent the developing tendency of language.  Therefore,  it  is  necessary  to  research  the  two  group’s  attitude  toward  letter  words  in  order  to more properly guide them to utilize languages to create a harmonious language environment.

Chapter Two Literature Review 

2.1 Definition of Letter Words 
It  is  no  doubt  that  the  first  task  of  an  academic  study  is  to  give  a  clear  delimitation  of  the  concept. However, the definition of letter words varies from person to person because of different research focuses and  environments.  In  order  to  avoid  confusing  our  understanding,  it  is  of  necessity  to  review  various definitions of letter words found in Linguistic so that the author can provide her own idea. At the beginning, because the definition isn’t clearly delimited, a large number of names are called to such  language  phenomenon,  such  as  “half-breed”,  “blend  words”,  “form-borrowed  words”,  “foreign words”,  “western  alphabet  words”  and  “non-Chinese  characters”(Yuan  Xinmei,  2002:  6).  It  is  these discussions on the name of letter words that stimulate the formation of their definition.  Liu Yongquan(1994) is the first person who put forward the definition of letter words in 1994, and he describes that  letter  word  is  a kind of  word  that  is partly  or  completely  expressed by  foreign alphabets in Chinese characters, such as B 超，卡拉 OK, CD and UFO. In 2002, he further develops his definition．He proclaims that letter words refer to “a kind of words which are composed of Latin letters，Greek letters，or Chinese Pinyin, and these letters mingled with signs，numbers or characters respectively”. He stresses that letter  words  also  include  Chinese  Pinyin  words,  apart  from  western  letter  words,  like  GB,  HSK,  and PSC.Clearly, the definition is more specific and comprehensive. At the same time, Guo Fuliang (1997) and Shen Mengyin (2001)agree with Liu’s idea.
