Chapter One INTRODUCTION 

1.1 Research Background 
During the late 19th and early 20th century, a most unsettled period, the imperialist invasion in a large scale, covering military affairs, politics, and culture, undermined the originally  impregnable  social  and  cultural  system.  The  dominant  ideology  and  poetics became  reluctant  to  face  an  unprecedented  challenge  with  constantly  changing emphasis and subjects of translation. The Shanghai Post (also called the Shen Newspaper Office) was established by an English  businessman  named  Ernest  Major  in  1872,   who  employed  Jiang  Zhixiang,  a scholar of late-Qing dynasty, as a chief editor. In the Shanghai Post, Jiang Zhixiang was sponsored  by  Ernest  Major  and  he  was  also  a  Juren  (a  successful  candidate  in  the imperial  examinations  at  the  provincial  level  in  the  Ming  and  Qing  dynasties)  with  a good  education,  which  developed  his  own  specific  translation  conception.  And meanwhile, Jiang Zhixiang's translation was mostly conducted in the late Qing Dynasty when  the  Qing  Government  was  confronted  with  domestic  suffering  and  foreign invasion  and  threatened  sovereign.  Jiang  Zhixiang's  translation  must  bear  distinct characteristics  of  that  age.  Therefore,  Jiang  Zhixiang's  translations  were  not  made  in  a vacuum.  Translators  function  in  a  given  culture  at  a  given  time.  The  way  they understand themselves and their social culture are important factors that may influence the way in which they translate.   It means that translations are done in different social conditions.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study
The  significance  of  the  study  can  be  illustrated  in  both  the  theoretical  and  the practical  aspects.  First  of  all,  the  thesis  is  designed  to  explore  the  question  whether ideology,  poetics  and  patronage  influence  literary  translation,  and  if  they  do  how  they work.  In  the  meantime,  applying  Lefevere's  manipulation  theory  into  Jiang  Zhixiang's translation may help us understand better the intrinsic nature of translation and the role played  by  ideology,  poetics  and  patronage  in  translating  activities,  especially  gain  a better  sense  of  translators’  role  acting  in  translation  practice,  cultural  reform  and ideological  revolution.  Moreover,  this  application  may  bring  us  a  new  perspective  of study to tra本论文由英语论文网提供整理，提供论文代写，英语论文代写，代写论文，代写英语论文，代写留学生论文，代写英文论文，留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
