nse of language in reading teaching. In fact, there are strong relationships between sense of language and reading. In the following passage, the author discusses the relationship between sense of language and reading and the influence of sense of language on reading by dividing it into five parts: 1) The definition of sense of language; 2) The psychological mechanism of the sense of language; 3) The definition and psychological mechanism of reading; 4) The relationship between the sense of language and reading; 5)The influences of sense of language on English reading for Chinese readers.
1. The definition of sense of language
The term for sense of language first appeared in German, spelled as Sprachefühl. It was translated into English in the year around 1904. The ninth copy of Webster Dictionary gives its definition as below:
(1) sensibility to conformity with or divergence from the established usage of a language.
(2) a feeling for what is linguistically effective or appropriate.
In China, there are different opinions on its definition. To sum up, they can be divided into three schools:
(3) The school of feeling: It holds that the sense of language is a kind of feeling on the spoken and written language. As Li Shanlin says that the sense of language is a feeling on the language in a text. (Li Hailin, 2000:231)
(4) The school of intuition: It states that the sense of language is an intuition on the spoken and written language. As Xu Yingyuan says that the sense of language is an intuition of the connotation of language. (Li Hailin, 2000:232)
(5) The school of assimilation: It argues that the sense of language is the assimilation of the language object. One of its representatives is Li Hailin. (See Li Hailin, 2000:233)
As intuition and feeling are only the description of the psychological movement on the surface level, the schools of feeling and intuition cannot offer a definition of and judgment on the essence of the sense of language. They are only the peripheral description, not the reveal of the inner law. Moreover, the reveal of the sense of language relies on its analysis of the psychological connotation. It should be defined on the level of psychological essence, and a generalization of the inner psychological law should be given, which should be both analytic and generalized, instead of descriptive. That is to say, it should be defined by a technical term. Luckily, the school of assimilation conforms to these two standards. As this
thesis will discuss mainly from the perspective of psycholinguistics, and in terms of the analysis above and the apprehension of the sense of language in practical use, this thesis will go on according to the school of assimilation.
2. The psychological mechanism of the sense of language
The assimilation theory is an important theory of Piaget on the cognitive development of human beings, which holds that people will use their original psychological schema to explain and describe an object when they want to recognize it. (Li Hailin, 2000:233) Schema refers to people’s cognitive structure, but emphasizes on the reproduction mechanism of the material. The greatest significance of the assimilation theory lies in its reveal of the role of people’s previous cognitive structure. It stresses that the acquisition of new information mainly relies on the proper original components’ interaction with the new information. The process of the sense of language is in essence a learning and recognition p
