it, such as eyeball movement, regression, scanning, the span of fixations and so on. Recognizing a word doesn’t happen during the eye-movement but in the duration of fixation. According to the Chinese psychologist Shen Youqian’s research in 1935, throughout the reading process, altogether, the movement of eyes occupies 5%-6% of the total reading time, most of which is spent on fixations, and people can only percept words and sentences in fixations. therefore the main task at the stage of recognition--perception is to recognize printed symbols and their syntagmatic relation correctly, and meanwhile, to accept the information accurately by the scientific use of fixation and overall perception.
(2) The second stage: Comprehension--association
Comprehension is a process of internalizing the reading material and then turning into the reader’s own knowledge and concepts. The criterion for comprehension is the meaning of material, that’s to say the meaning achieved after the combination of written material and the reader’s acquired knowledge and experiences. The obtainment of the meaning depends on the response of the reader’s former experiences to the reading materials. The extend of grasping the meaning relies on the range and depth of the reader’s compatible experiences, the reader’s psychological power to explain these experiences, his attitude to the subject and the verbal act of reading, and so on. As reading is human’s most fundamental learning activity, the comprehension of reading will of course be influenced by the reader’s cognitive structure, and forms a direct ratio with the reader’s knowledge. Modern neuroscience has revealed that when reading, the reader is experiencing a sort of mute communication with the material (Wei Zhicheng, 2000:39). Two flows of information --- the information from the material and the information that stored inside the reader converge during this process. It is comprehension that makes them inter-connected. The new information links with the reader’s former experiences through accommodation or assimilation. This causes reader’s inner structure to change from initial imbalance to temporary balance and at last arrives at the goal of comprehension. By using association and imagination, the reader connects the new information with his old experiences and the former images and meanwhile creates new ones. Comprehension varies with the sorts of material and the purposes of reading. Discussing from the depth, there are surface comprehension and underlying comprehension; according to semantic, there are comprehension and connotation comprehension; according to creativity, there exist original form comprehension and creative comprehension, while according to the common reading texts, there are letter comprehension, word comprehension, sentence comprehension, textual comprehension and main idea comprehension. However, if the reader has mastered the regularity of connecting the old and new knowledge and are able to give free rein to his association and imagination, comprehension will procedure smoothly.
(3) The third stage: evaluation--thinking
Based on the comprehension of the reading material, the reader will spontaneously evaluate it. This process will involve a series of thinking activities, for example, start from form to content, from content to form, from life to works, from whole to part and from part to whole, from surface to depth, in order to get a gradual understanding and evaluation of the written
