摘要:This study has enriched the previous studies on high school students’ learning strategies,more importantly; it provides valuable data and materials into the field of comparative studyof strategy use between high school common students and art students.

2 Significance of the study
When in the past 30 years not a single language teaching method is totally effective, aconsensus begins to form that despite the fact that teachers constantly occupy very importantpositions and assume an unmatched role in class, the center of students’ learning can only belearners themselves. If learners have no willingness to participant, let alone strive hard inlearning, it is quite a difficult situation for teachers to handle. Hence began the shift fromteacher-centered to learner-centered in classroom teaching. Learners are no longer always in apassive position to accept what to learn but should know how to learn well with their ownspecificity (specificity in different Education background for instance). “Give people a fishand you feed them for a day; teach them to fish and you feed them for life.” The research oflearning strategy which aims to improve learners leaning proficiency, make their learningmore effective and help them become successful language learners and benefit their life-longlearning and independent learning is the way that “teaches them to fish”.


Chapter Two Literature Review


Chapter two provides an overview of language learning strategies, including definitionsand classifications from different researchers. Because definitions and classifications arevaried in amount of numbers, only some widely accepted definitions and classification arecited in this thesis. Important studies and achievements in the field both home and abroad arealso listed in detail.


2.1 Definition of language learning strategy
Language learning strategy refers to strategies adopted by language learners to makeone’s learning more efficient. When language learning strategy is mentioned, it includesstrategy applied for the accomplishment of a certain learning activity or task, and alsostrategy that guides one to plan, adjust and evaluate learning targets, learning process andlearning results, and further more, one’s own understanding for a foreign language andlanguage learning is also in the scope of language learning strategy (Wen Qiufang, 2004). It isunderstandable that Wen Qiufang’s definition of language learning strategy could not beaccepted by everyone, since different researchers hold different opinions in the understandingof language learning strategy; hence there is still not an unanimous definition for languagelearning strategy today. Following are six different definitions:Stern (1983) defined language learning strategy as following: In foreign languagelearning, learners may adopt in their study some particular methods with some general trendsor characteristics. These methods were strategies in practice, besides methods, a term named“technique” bears meaning of some behaviors which could be observed in one’s learning.
