The first preference of any organisation should be the satisfaction of the customer’s needs and demands (Prahalad and Hamel, 1990).But unfortunately firestone’s management could not work in terms of organisational boundaries. Core Competencies can be the attributes that an organisation may require to achieve the competitive edge. Firestone could have configured their resources properly to compete successfully by looking up at the available resources internally. Firestone could have achieved core competencies in such a way that it could have been difficult for their competitors to compete in this market conditions. According to Prahalad and Hamel core Competencies is the only reason for development in a learning organisation.

The issues raised in the essay clearly describes what a learning organisation is and how can an organisation be affected if it fails to show that it is a learning organisation. An organisation needs to completely improve and learn in order to survive in the tough market. An example of the case study of firestone is presented which shows that it failed even though it was rated among the top five companies just because they refused to learn and they could not prove that they were a learning organisation. The essay highlights the facts that companies need to provide training and development programmes in order to retain their staff. Companies should develop strategies and HR Policies such that it cannot be copied by the competitors. Resource based strategy and view is another important aspect of an organisation. Company should always view their staff as asset rather than a cost .Companies should understand the fact that it is the employees (staff) of the company that decides standard and reputation of a company. If the staff is properly trained and developed and there are symptoms that suggest that organisation is learning then such an organisation can definitely compete and survive in any kind of tough and competitive market and climate.
